Austin Aries made a name for himself in the WWE’s cruiserweight division in 2017. After competing against Neville in three stellar pay-per-view contests, Aries appeared to be in line for more chances.
Then, out of nowhere, the company asked Aries to leave. His last WWE match took place on July 1, 2017 in Japan. He fought in a Triple Threat match against Akira Tozawa and Neville at a live event in Tokyo.
The Greatest Man That Ever Lived confessed that he was taking a month off in 2019 to recover from a few minor injuries during a conversation with Chris Van Vliet.
But on the second day of treatment, he got a call from Triple H, his former NXT boss. When the rehab programme began on Thursday, Aries said,
“I got a call from Hunter [Triple H] just to let me know I’m being fired. I was surprised and like me, HHH was also shocked, but it was Vince’s decision.”
It’s known to everyone that Vince McMahon was in charge of determining who works in what capacity in WWE during his tenure of 40 years.
Even to those worked closely with him, his unexpected decisions to have wrestlers released out of nowhere made no sense.
He fired many promising superstars just when they looked ready to climb to the top. Aries was one of those guys. Infact, Bray Wyatt too had a similar situation when Vince looked to have ran out of ideas and let him go.
Austin Aries had a stellar match with Neville at WrestleMania 33
When Aries fought Neville for the Cruiserweight Championship on the opening event of WrestleMania 33, it was the best match of his time with the WWE.
Austin Aries was close to a magnificent victory when he had Neville trapped in his submission move. However, he lost the match after Neville poked finger to his eye and locked him in Rings of Saturn.
Vince McMahon has allegedly no plans for Austin Aries.
Elaborating on his firing, Aries said McMahon ran out of creative ideas for his character. As a result, he was ruthlessly let go by the company:
“They just didn’t have plans for me and that was it. Asked him [Triple H] some questions if it was because of some contract things that we were negotiating. I literally was surprised because there were no issues. I hadn’t had any issues with anybody.”
